I'm not sure what I've done, but am writing immediately to apologize for the unintended offense. I suspicion it might be the mordant quote from Duke de Mondo discussing JJ's intimidating presence to other Irish writers such as himself. And indeed, DdM does love Joyce and Beckett and O'Brien with a fervent passion. His sentiment had that classic feeling of "How will I ever match that" that I've heard from other authors. (Roddy Doyle for one.) His full quote makes that clearer and maybe I'd add that for clarity. Though, my hope is always to tease people on to reading the originals of the things I quote.
At any rate, I do apologize. I also apologize for missing any opportunity to meet in Philadelphia but that trip was seriously marred by family illness and things were cut quite short.
